I read somewhere that stated that the reason why the most popular songs are THEE popular songs, is because they consist of repetition. Songs like Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off,” Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass,” and Rhianna’s “Work,” are all evident of a repeating, and now, iconic line.
Now, there’s another pattern taking over the airwaves, The Millenial Whoop. An article by Patrick Metzger on The Patterning blog, does a much better job at explaining the structure of the melody, so I reccommend having a look at his post.
The melody has been around since the 70’s, but has peaked in the past few years. The same melody, literally gets around, which makes every other song on the radio, sound the same. Also, there is a small group of songwriters that have written endless hits for an endless amount of singers. These songwriters include, Max Martin and Jack Antonoff, who have written and produced with singers including Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, FUN., and Backstreet Boys.
