It’s crazy to think about huge pop stars who have grown up in the Disney spotlight and shoot up to straight up STARDOM! Yeah, sure they’ve been in the bizz since diaper days and their connections are from their parents, blah blah blah. But wow, have they taken the music industry by storm!
It’s not a new trend that has only occurred in this day and age. Check out Britany, nay I need to say her last name? Christina Aguilara, Justin Timberlake. Just a couple of pioneers of the Disney to Pop Music Stardom. And man are they game changers! From screen to radio to complete triple threats and endless shelves of accomplishments.
But, this blog is about Millenials transforming and now defining the music of the Z Gen. So who are these players?
The girl next door: Selena Gomez.
The happy hippie advocate: Miley Cyrus.
The outspoken self-lover: Demi Lovato.
The charismatic ex-boybander: Nick Jonas.
Let’s start with Gomez. Selena has 102 million, and counting, followers on Instagram. She’s ruling the world with a simple post and it’s easy to see why. From Barney, to Disney, to sold out tours. Easily, one of the most successful stars that Disney has produced. She’s basically the Millennial Brittany, which is very hard to surpass, since Spears’ career is still in insane demand. Out of the 4 players, however, I’d have to admit that Selena is actually one of the weaker singers. I hear Cyrus, Lovato, and Jonas and I think: Complete powerhouses! This doesn’t mean Selena’s bad, in fact she’s great, but her shoot to pop singer stardom has a lot to do with her social media platforms and her ability to sell on screen. Once again, not all bad things, but when it comes to music, I think we’re all ready to see something completely new from Gomez!
Miley Cyrus has made a completely new image within just the past few years. Her performance during the Video Music Awards in 2013, pulled her back into the limelight as a new face in the pop music world. Sure it’s a little outrageous, but like Gaga and Ke$ha, we don’t want to change her, most importantly, the media doesn’t want to change her. Cyrus’ advocacy in the LGBTQ community and Cannabis community has brought her a new audience, which every young child star turned Popstar wants (Justin Bieber, for example). Her new image has also landed her a position as a coach on the newest season of NBC’s The Voice, a seat that may not have been obtained prior to her change. The thing I admire most about Cyrus is her humility. Cyrus’ last album “Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz,” was released by her on SoundCloud, where users can download free music. She stated herself in a New York Times interview, that she has the luxury to make whatever music she wants and doesn’t need the extra dollar bills to get by.
Lovato is next on our list, and she’s M.I.A.? We haven’t had a new album from Demi since last year, but in all honesty, it feels like ages ago, because no one ever talks about it! Out of all the artists on the list, I feel like Demi has the most potential and talent, but it’s be yawn worthy. However, Demi uses her media platforms to promote self love more than any of her colleagues, which I can appreciate, because I have many younger siblings going through these phases. In a social media world, it’s nice to see some positivity even in just a caption. Demi immediately became a hit after her first Disney Channel Original Movie, Camp Rock. Which lead to a highly demanded sequel, Camp Rock 2. Demi’s written many of her own songs which deal with anxiety, hurt, stress, the not so glamorous, but very truthful aspects of life. This vulnerability makes her relatable to girls and boys everywhere, which is why she is a force to be reckon with.
And the man of the hour, Nick Jonas! First of all, I applaud Nick for making the treacherous comeback into the spotlight as a single artist. With his background in theater, songwriting skills, and the ability to play several instruments, it was easy to see which of the three brothers would be taking the world by storm single handily. His brother Joe didn’t try having a wack at a single JoBro, and the three did try coming back after a few years off, but things were not going to be the same since they left a boyband gap for a few years. By the time their new singles, “Pom Poms” and “First Time,” came out in 2013, they had some pretty steep competition with the hot sensation, One Direction. But out of all of this, Nick came out on top as the new JT. He is currently touring with Demi Lovato, and I’m excited to see what he’s got up his sleeves next year!
